Is He Serious?

March 24, 2010

Ripley’s Believe it or Not! offers visitors insight into amazing artifacts, remarkable people, and out of this world artwork.  And while there’s no category for unbelievable statements, Ripley’s Times Square would start the category with the recent comments from Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher about super group U2.

Liam and Noah Gallagher of Oasis have never been the biggest fans of super group U2

In recent comments, Brother Liam essentially says that U2 doesn’t really have any fans and the band that regularly sells out arenas all over the world probably pays fans to come to their shows.  Gallagher says, “I reckon they buy them. With all the money they’ve made, they just bought a load of people and every time they do a gig they get a shovel and pile them into their gigs to make them look good.”

In addition, he goes on to say that he has never seen a person wearing a U2 shirt or been in someone’s house that has a U2 record.  I believe Mr. Gallagher needs to get out a little bit more.  The band has won 22 Grammy Awards and has sold over 145 million records according to Wikipedia.  In addition, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility and listed #22 on Rolling Stone’s top 100 artists of all time.

Perhaps Gallagher stays at home quite a bit or visits only with his brother.  Regardless of whether you’re a fan of U2’s music, their impact on the industry and success is indisputable.  Unless, of course, your last name is Gallagher.

While Oasis has had quite a bit of their own success and quite frankly, has put out some good music, the bitterness towards U2 is bizarre.  I’m not sure why it has to be a contest as last I checked, many groups can coexist, get their message out, and be successful.

I don’t know the reason behind Gallagher’s sour grapes.  I guess jealousy would be the obvious reason.  Or perhaps he auditioned at one point to join the band and was rejected.  Regardless, he should probably focus more on his own music and stick to singing as opposed to making outlandish statements that make him look foolish.
